The city of Salvador and the village of Trancoso, located in Porto Seguro, are among the ten Brazilian destinations preferred by tourists, according to the survey carried out by the international website TripAdvisor. The result was based on visitors’ choices, mostly foreigners, during 2012. The website is available in thirty countries and gathers comments of seventy-five million travelers throughout the world.

In the ranking, Bahia’s capital appears in fifth position, and what catches the tourist’s eye is the great influence of the African culture in the local music, cuisine, dance and religion. Salvador’s Carnival is also mentioned by tourists as one of the main attractions of the city.

Some other attractions are Pelourinho, Porto da Barra Beach, São Francisco Church, Bonfim Church and Olodum.
The breathtaking landscapes put the village of Trancoso in tenth position in the ranking. Its beautiful white sand beaches with calm waters and natural pools fascinate visitors who are also enchanted by the scenery marked by the colorful houses of Porto Seguro.

In the survey, only Bahia and Rio de Janeiro appear with more than one city. Check out the result at www.tripadvisor.com

Considered the second biggest popular manifestation and the main religious event in Bahia, Bonfim Festival takes place on January 17th in 2013. “Baianas” wearing typical costumes start the ritual, carrying vases with water and perfume to wash the stairway and the parvis of the church.

The cortege leaves Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Praia Church and goes to Bonfim, a eight-kilometer walk. Thousands of people participate in the celebration, all dressed in white to honor Oxalá, a deity that represents Our Lord of Bonfim in Candomblé (African religion). While the “baianas” wash the stairway with water and perfume, the believers sing the hymn of Our Lord of Bonfim.

The celebration started in 1754, when the image of Senhor Crucificado – brought by the Portuguese captain, Teodósio Rodrigues in 1745 – was transferred from Penha Church, in Itapagipe, to its own church, in Colina Sagrada.
